Combined with Nodal Ninja rotating tripod heads, I’m using this lens to produce equirectangular 360deg x 180deg panoramas. Six shots in 60deg increments work perfectly when stitched with Hugin or AutoPano.

Limited depth of field is a problem — I find that typically I have to operate the lens at f/11 or f/16 to get decent full-frame-in-focus results, which necessitates shutter times of > 0.5s indoors, so it’s only really useful for static scenes.

I have been a fairly serious hobbyist photographer for about a year now, since purchasing my Canon DSLR. Many hours spent researching photography in general and lenses in particular have led me to this lens. From what I’ve found online and on Flickr, it doesn’t seem to be very well-known, especially compared to this other Sigma lens, which I also considered:Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras. In other words, this purchase felt more risky to me, but I think it turned out quite well.

Pros:
-Future-Proof: If you’re considering this lens, you most likely have a “cropped” sensor DSLR. All but the most expensive DSLRs have them. Many new lenses – “DC” lenses for Sigma, “EF-S” lenses for Canon – will ONLY fit on cropped-frame cameras. In the future, if and when full-frame cameras become cheaper and more popular, these lenses might not fit new cameras. This “DG” lens, however, will fit on both cropped- and full-frame cameras (albeit with different focal length equivalents – it takes wider shots on full-frame).
-Depth-of-Field: I’m loving the small DOF on this lens. It’s nice and smooth.
-Low-Light Photography: With its large aperture, it’s fast in low light. Quite fun if you’re used to slow zoom lenses!
-Construction: Looks nice, feels nice, and the focus ring has just the right amount of resistance.

Cons:
-Auto-Focus: The AF could be faster, but that is to be expected without a hypersonic/ultrasonic motor. It also sounds more gravelly than I’m used to, which is a little unnerving, but it seems fine. I have not seen any AF accuracy problems.

Other Considerations:
-Size/Weight: It’s hefty, but it’s nothing compared to some of those telephotos out there. Admittedly, that’s an apples-and-oranges comparison, but still. I love the size and weight; your mileage may vary.
-77mm filter thread size: Again, it’s big. Filters can be expensive. On the other hand, it looks and operates like serious business.
-Image Quality: I am very pleased with the quality, but I’m no studio photographer. I don’t take pictures of test charts for fun.

The Canon EOS Digital Rebel brings advanced digital performance and SLR controls to everyday photographers. Optics and Resolution A large-format, high-resolution CMOS sensor captures 6.3 million pixels to deliver up to 3,027 x 2,048-pixel images. Other resolution modes include 2,048 x 1,360 and 1,536 x 1,024. As it captures images, the sensor amplifies each pixel’s electric charge, for ultrafast image scanning. The large sensor also has a 3:2 aspect ratio, traditional to 35mm film, for a familiar compositional feel. Canon’s exclusive DIGIC image processor offers advanced signal processing algorithms that heighten precision and detail, smooth gradation in highlight areas, and create color reproduction that is as vivid as it is utterly natural. Additionally, the DIGIC’s speedier processing improves the camera’s battery performance, and adds to the camera’s overall responsiveness and agility. More Features With the 1.8-inch LCD screen, you can zoom images from 1.5x all the way to 10x, moving up, down, left, and right to see any area up close. You can even advance to the next shot in the enlarged view with no need to zoom again. Printing Canon has introduced a series of printers designed to work directly with its lineup of digital cameras, including the Digital Rebel. Using these printers, no computer is required–simply connect the camera to the printer and start printing. Printers include Canon’s bubble-jet direct printers i900D and i960 and card photo printers CP-200 and CP-300. New PictBridge compatibility allows you to connect the camera to any PictBridge-conforming printer and access a wide range of printing media, modes, and styles. Storage and Transfer Images are stored on CompactFlash Type I or II memory cards; the Digital Rebel is MicroDrive compatible. The Digital Rebel does not include a memory card. My first exposure (no pun intended) with this camera happened when my estranged father came back in to my life, and to overcompensate for being out of my life for many many years, he gave me this digital camera. After saying no for too many times, and I felt that I began to offend him, I took the camera. Let me sum this camera up in three little letters….. WOW! I can not believe how easy this camera is to operate. This camera will do two things for you. #1 it will draw you into the hobby of photography, and #2 it will make you feel like you missed your calling, and that you should have been a professional photographer. You will most likely find yourself entering photo contests! I have been blown away at the photos I have taken. I think to myself… “Did I really take that photo?” If you get the camera, make sure to get two batteries and multiple memory cards you will need them as you will find yourself taking so many pictures with this camera. I had researched this lens for almost 4 months before actually deciding to purchase. Like a lot of people that just bought their 7D with the kit lens, I was secretly wishing I had the funds to purchase the Canon 24-70 f2.8L. Unfortunately that lens is a sizable investment when building your kit on a budget.

Thats when the Sigma came in. Sigma has a few lenses in this focal length, all with the same speed (f2.8). One at about a 0 price point, one with an 0 price point, and this one at about 0. The lower price point could be compared to the low end Canon lenses. Fairly quality glass for the price you pay, but very under built (plastic). The higher end lens can be compared to almost the L. Very well built, internal zoom, and HSM for quiet and fast zoom. This lens could be compared to a mid level Canon EF lens. Very well built, just lacking the bells and whistles of the high-end version.

I had a chance to test this lens out on Manhattan Beach in California, and the first thing I noticed was how sharp the lens is between f4-5.6. The focus at f2.8 is clean as well, but does have some soft edges shooting closer to the 70mm range. Still very much a quality image coming out of a lens at less then half the price of the L.

The Sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro has an interesting way of getting into Manual focus. There are two switches, one near the base of the lens and the is the focus ring itself that you pull back to engage. Not too big of en issue when shooting video really since you have no need to engage the auto-focus in video mode, but can take some getting used to when switching back forth from video to still.

This also is big. Not quite as big as the L, but very close. It also has matte-like finish that really looks slick. I love the shape of this lens as well. Really looks kickass on the 7D body. Be prepared to drop a little extra cash on the filters however as the thread is 82mm. The upside though is all the filters you buy for this lens, you could actually use a step-down ring and not have any worries of vignetting as far as I know.

PROS: Very solid build, fast focus, fast speed (constant f2.8)
CONS: No IS (but neither does the current L), slightly soft edges at 2.8/70mm, Large filters needed

If you don’t have enough cash to drop on the L series lens, but still want a quality lens, absolutely go for this lens. Very happy with this purchase.
